This past weekend was the last round of the Canadian ATV Pro championship in Ste-Julie, Quebec. The weather was perfect and the track was in top condition. Just 20 minutes east of Montreal, the natural terrain Ste-Julie track is perfect for ATV racing with great speed, big jumps and a nice view for the spectators. The promoters did an awesome job for the race as the spectator turnout was really impressive.
Prior to the race, Richard Pelchat had a 16 point lead over second place so finishing the race was top priority. First moto, Pelchat did not get the jump he wanted and came out second in the first turn. Jasmin Plante was in the lead, Pelchat pressured him but was playing it safe. Pelchat didn't want to take any risk, but instead waited for a mistake that didn't happen. He crossed the finish line second and gained a few more points over Michael Ouellet (Second in the Championship).
Can-Am/BRP’s Pelchat really wanted to finish the season strong and win the second moto. Have a look at the start of the second moto....
“I rocketed out of the gate and when I clicked into fourth it started to wheely. I ran for 200feet with a big fat wheelie. In the corner, Jasmin and I were neck and neck but I got the inside of him and started first. I put the hammer down in the first lap to open the gap a bit. By lap 4, I had a comfortable four second lead, so I started to relax a bit more. At the mid-race mark, Jasmin broke his muffler and was black flagged. With a big lead over second place, I put it in cruised control to take the checkered flag, the overall win for the day and the championship”, said a relieved Pelchat.
This 2008 Canadian Championship marks his 6th Canadian Championship. It was a memorable year with injuries sustained in the middle of summer, making it hard for him to make a comeback and win. It was an emotional moment for him to receive the number one plate.
Pelchat commented “I can't thank enough my mechanic Mathieu for being the best and always giving 110% to ensure my quads are ready. My girlfriend Bianka’s continuous support and belief in me, the great food, the clean gear and every moment we share together. All of my sponsors put their trust in me and help me achieve my goals. A big THANKS goes to all of the people at Can-Am. I love my Can-Am, it so powerful now it is ridiculous and it handles like in a dream. All the testing, training, practicing, thinking, designing it paid off!”
